reflexology

Reflexology is a complementary therapy in which the therapist uses compression to stimulate a complex system of nerves in the feet to reach all major parts of the body. This healing art dates back to 5,000 BC, and was practiced by the ancient Chinese and Egyptians for a wide range of ailments, ranging from poor circulation to migraine, to disorders of the internal organs. Dr Williams Fitzgerald, an American surgeon, developed the theory of reflex zones in 1913. Eunice Ingham then used this theory in the 1930s to map the reflex points on to the feet and also the corresponding points of the anatomy that were clearly mirrored in the feet. Doreen Bayly, who trained in the USA with Eunice Ingham, later introduced Reflexology to the UK.

The body has the ability to heal itself. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, it is in a state of 'imbalance', and vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and to encourage healing. A reflexologist uses hands only to apply gentle pressure to the feet. For each person the application and the effect of the therapy are unique.

Since reflexology treats the whole person, not the symptoms of the disease, most people benefit from the treatment. The therapy brings relief to a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, and it is suitable for all ages. Once your body is in tune, it is wise to have regular treatments in order to maintain health and well-being.

An increasing number of people are using this safe and natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonizing the body. At you first treatment you will be asked questions about your health and lifestyle. This is an important aspect of the treatment as it is beneficial for the therapist to have an understanding of all factors that may be affecting your health including how you feel physically and emotionally. You will be asked to remove only your shoes and socks and then the therapist will work on your feet. The treatment will conclude with a relaxing foot massage. Each session lasts for about one hour.
